When did you start doing CrossFit?

June 2013 – thanks to the Markers and the Nivens

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in Barrington and graduated from BHS in 1999. I am married to Betsy (class of 2000) and we have two crazy/fun girls ages 4 and 2….#3 arriving at the end of May! We live in Biltmore and are both fortunate to work in Barrington. I am a Financial Advisor with a practice in Barrington, and Betsy is an 8th grade teacher at Station Middle School.

 What was your fitness routine before CrossFit?

My preferred routine was playing basketball. However, I became injury prone and decided that it wasn’t cool to show up to client meetings in a boot and crutches (happened only a few different times). I then attempted to become a runner. Negative. My last attempt pre-crossfit was P90X, but I wasn’t about to purchase an industrial size floor cleaner like CFB runs after my workouts.

 Nickname?

“FC” – Fat Chad. Resulting from an injury playing volleyball in college where I blew out my ankle (beer + grilled cheese + no exercise = extra 20lbs).

 What goals have you achieved while at CFB and what goals do you have for the future?

Initially, my goal was to simply regain my athleticism and find a sport that made me excited to go to the gym. I found that at CFB within my first few workouts. I also hoped to find something that Betsy and I would enjoy together. This was probably the most satisfying goal that was achieved along the way.

The goal setting concept has expanded dramatically. I never enjoyed lifting weights, but now I can’t stand missing a workout that includes strength (OHS are an exception). Being able to RX the majority of WODs was a major goal that was achieved over my first year.

My 2015 CFB goals: (1.) Muscle Up; (2.) Muscle Up; (3.) Handstand Push-ups in a WOD; (4.) continue to 1RPM everything; (5.) MUSCLE UP?

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

My alarm goes off a LOT earlier. A healthier lifestyle is the obvious impact. I am in the best shape of my life. It has also re-engaged the competitiveness that seemed to be missing.

 What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Barrington?

  • Take your time. Get the form first and don’t concern yourself with the weight you are lifting.
  • Push yourself to show up over the first few weeks. It will soon become an addiction.
  • Don’t hesitate to partner with someone that you don’t know in class. The community at CFB is awesome…especially the 5am crew
  • After achieving #1…invest in lifting shoes
