When did you start CrossFit?

August 2011

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a Full-time Firefighter/Paramedic for the Village of Streamwood. I love my job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love being able to help people and I love going into work every day. I have been married to my beautiful wife Morgan for 3 years this October and we are expecting our first child in April of 2015. We rescued our dog Samuel Adams ( Sam) 4 years ago and we enjoy spending time with him. I enjoy time outside fishing, mountain biking, camping, four wheeling, and trap shooting. I also enjoy making my own beer and visiting breweries wherever we travel. My favorite beer is Daisy Cutter from Half Acre Brewery in Chicago.

What was your fitness routine before CrossFit?

I didn’t have a great fitness routine before starting CrossFit. It was kind of random what I did and I wasn’t really motivated. I would go through phases were I would train for something and then give it up. Like the Chicago Marathon in 2010, I trained for a year for it then quit running after I finished. CrossFit is exactly what I have needed my whole life; A structured workout system that works every part of your body just about everyday. Best of all I get to do it with a class full of friends, which fulfills my need to compete.

How has your view about CrossFit changed since your first WOD at CFB?

I was extremely intimidated to join CrossFit and was really nervous for my first WOD. After that first WOD I was hooked. I was literally high on CrossFit and instantly addicted. Since then I realized that CrossFit is not just about me and my goals, although that is a big part of it. It is about everyone succeeding and reaching their goals, too. So, if by chance I finish a workout before someone and am up off of the floor, I do my best to encourage the rest of the class to finish the workout. I also get excited when someone reaches their goal. Like Melvin, I am still excited that he got his muscle up a few weeks ago!

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? And have you achieved any of these goals?

I was looking to get in better shape for life in general and for the physical demands that come with being a firefighter. I can say now that I am in the best shape of my life and I feel great.

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

CrossFit has helped me to better deal with the physical demands of being a firefighter. As a firefighter we can be doing something that doesn’t require a lot of physical activity, i.e. cleaning toilets, cooking, or even sleeping, to 5 minutes later working our butts off fighting a fire or extricating someone from a car. I have noticed a difference in my performance since joining CrossFit. I also feel better in general. I feel more confident that I will be healthy longer in life.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Barrington?

Have fun. Don’t stress out about not being able to do a workout RX. You’ll get there. Become a part of the community. I have met a lot of good friends at CFB. Don’t be shy. Everyone was new at some point and didn’t know what TTB was.
