When did you start doing CrossFit?

Just about 2 years ago. I wish I would have found you sooner!!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a RN in a community hospital ER, I teach nursing at a local college and I am mom to 2 beautiful young ladies. (Well, one young lady and one WODKILLA Jr).

I have a degree in culinary art from Le Cordon Blue and a Master’ degree in Health and Human services counseling from DePaul. I’m a licensed professional counselor in Illinois. Two fun jobs I’ve had were probationary firefighter/paramedic and a wine consultant.

What was your fitness routine before CrossFit?

In my 20’s I trained for and participated in 3 sprint distance triathlons and 2 Olympic distance triathlons. In my 30’s I started focusing on weight training. I bought a ‘weight lifting book” for women and headed out to Lifetime Fitness. I quickly found out that I didn’t have a clue so I “hired” a personal trainer. After my kids were born I needed Yoga …BAD. In my early 40’s I decided to do a “bucket list” marathon. I trained for a summer and crossed the finish line (6th from last) that October. I’ll NEVER do that again! I HATE running. I stumbled on Crossfit in my “mid 40”s” when an out of town visitor asked me “Is there a box around here”? After regaining my composure I inquired about this “Box”. She described what was going on there and I HAD to check it out. The rest is Crossfit history.

How has your view about CrossFit changed since your first WOD at CFB?

It went from “What the hell is this?!” to “I love this! “.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? And have you achieved any of these goals?

My goal was to kick Mother Nature’s booty….YEP!

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

There really isn’t as aspect that it has not had an effect on.

Physically: I feel stronger and more motivated than I ever have.

Dietary: From Carbo loading to strict Paleo.

Financially: I can’t stop buying Crossfit clothes, shoes and gear. This is now an exponential problem since my daughter is Crossfit crazy too.

Emotionally : I’m a single mom with 2 kids and 2 jobs. There are days when it seems like “it’s just too much”. I have clearly had the thought and have even spoken it out loud “ Just get to Cross fit and you’ll be OK…you’ll feel better after the WOD “. I always do.

Family/Community: This is probably the biggest benefit/joy that I receive from Crossfit. A sense of belonging. I look forward to seeing familiar faces, sharing a story and having a laugh with my class “regulars”. I’ve found family recipes, made great friends and   hope this process continues over and over.I’ve seen Crossfit criticized for being a “cult “. Ok then, I belong to the coolest fit cult ever. For me this ”cult”is really a community. My kids are motivated and mentored by other members and even babysit for their kids. I received so much support after my hospitalization last year. Coming back to Crossfit after that was not only a goal but a necessity. I really can’t thank the members at CFB enough for all the positive experiences they bring into my family’s life.

Advice to new members :

Just keep coming and don’t get discouraged. And NEVER EVER beat yourself up while comparing yourself to others. We’ve all had a first day. There is no finish line here for anyone. Every day you participate you WIN. Have FUN !
